He said bragging rights were on the line and he desperately wanted to outdo his father.

"Dad's biggest is 197kg and I want to try and beat that," the youngster said.

As well as the monster marlin Nocelli senior has caught he's also managed a massive 260kg tiger shark.

"That was just between Port Macquarie and Plomer," he said. "In only about 30 metres of water just off the beach. I was actually quiet surprised by that."

He said there was a special feeling when hooked up to big-game fish that keeps him coming back for more each year.

"Just watching them swim up behind the lure and then taking it," he said. "It's the adrenaline that races through your body when you catch one of these big fish. And then watching them come up and swim beside the boat when you bring them in."

He said a large part of their success rests with the lure designer, Beechwood's Tony Graham.

"They're special hollow point lures and they're made locally," he said. "We've had a lot of success with them."
